My photography career began years ago in search of the often elusive dramatic grand landscape. Mountains, oceans, sunrises, and sunsets were the primary focus of my attention. Wide-angle lenses occupied the available space in my backpack.
On a whim I recently purchased my first dedicated macro lens curious what it would be like to photograph what was at my feet rather than at the horizon. I was immediately hooked by what I saw through the viewfinder. At the tip of my lens lay the natural world’s smallest details, those that I had never really seen or appreciated before. My interest in the landscape turned to it’s smallest components and now occupy my primary photographic pursuit.
For me macro photography is about nature’s lines, patterns and textures. Interpretation of the subject is often accomplished through the use of selective focus and enhanced by the quality and direction of light.
My transition from landscape/scenic photography to that of closeup/macro photography is a work in progress; I have a lot to learn. And while I’m reluctant to let go of the grand scene completely (as evident by the inclusion of such a gallery on this website) I look forward to exploring the macro world in depth.
It is my hope that the images presented here encourage the viewer to look for the often overlooked small details in nature.
