Macrophotograph showing the iridescent colors of ammolite (Placenticeras sp.). Ammolite is composed of the fossilized shells of ammonites and gained gemstone status in 1981. This specimen is late Cretaceous in age (70 million years) and is from the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada.
